How accurate is Crossplag’s AI detection?
We tested Crossplag’s AI detection features by putting it through six tests.
- We generated 3 different types of AI-written content using ChatGPT.
- We used 3 human-written pieces of content, two from our website (that were written by us!) and one from a Forbes article (which is presumably written by a human!).
In an ideal world, the ChatGPT content will be flagged as 100% AI, and our pieces will be 100% human.
Let’s see what the results say.
AI-Written Sample One
In this first example, we will get a GPT-created response to the prompt: “Explain artificial intelligence in simple terms”.
Putting this through the detector is a success – 100% written by AI.
AI-Written Sample Two
In the second example, we will get a GPT-created response to the prompt: “Summarize the plot of Harry Potter in 5 sentences”.
Another success, though this one with a lower degree of certainty – 71% written by AI.
AI-Written Sample Three
This time, let’s see whether AI’s creative side can be detected. In the third example, we will get a GPT-created response to the prompt: “Write the plot of an episode of Seinfeld where Jerry is explaining artificial intelligence to George and Cramer”.
Perfect detection on this result – 100% written by AI.
Human-Written Sample 1
Now we will test the human-written samples. This first one is from our post on the difference between AI and automation.
Putting this through the detector is a success – 1% written by AI (though we can assure you it is 0%).
Human-Written Sample 2
The second sample is from another of our posts, The Guide to AI in Graphic Design.
This time around, the detector says that it is 2% certain it is written by AI. Passed the test!
Human-Written Sample 3
Lastly, let’s test a recently published Forbes article on the most valuable sports franchise.
The last sample is also a success – 1% written by AI.
Conclusion
Overall, Crossplag did an excellent job at detecting AI versus human content. Two out of three of the AI pieces were detected at 99%, and the other was at 71%. Three out of the three pieces that were written by humans were found to be written by humans.
Excellent results.
Can Crossplag be fooled?
Reading Twitter these days, content and SEO professionals are claiming that these AI-content detectors can be “fooled”. There seem to be several ways to fool them, which include:
- Changing punctuation
- Making spelling errors
- Paraphrasing
We took the sample that was found to be 100% artificial intelligence and made a few changes to the text. We changed the punctuation, made two spelling mistakes, and rewrote a few sentences. Let’s see what the results tell us.
It looks like the detector can be fooled, as now it says that it is mainly written by a human. This begs the question: would you consider a text to be AI-written if it was edited by a human?
